If you've never had a Rainier Cherry, you're in for a treat! These large orange, red and yellow cherries come from the Rainier Valley of Washington State and are very juicy, sweet and a touch tangy. It's a cross between the Bing cherry and Van cherry which was developed at WSU in 1952 by Harry Fogle.
It's possible this day was chosen to mark an anniversary, though we're unable to find that reference. It is also possible, since Rainier Cherries are at their peak in July, this date was chosen by someone simply to remind people to pick up a bag and enjoy. After all, eating Rainier cherries is the best way to celebrate this day.
